I decided to make a piece based on a fraktur and then I got the brilliant idea to use some old pearl cotton I had.
I realized after I used it, that it was thicker than the ones in the store. Not a good idea. I made a few holes, in the eye area, so I double punched it and then used glue to make sure the floss would stay. I ended up using 6 strand floss for the background and punching it in a one height, so the design which is in a 3 height stands out. Hard to see in a picture. So, now I know, do not use thick cottons on weavers cloth;)
Then I decided to try watercolor on some laid paper I bought. I read that the original frakturs were done on laid paper. I usually use heavier weight water color papers. I used a freebie design by Twigs N Sprigs to make this cute little picture with saying. It is done in black ink and then I used watercolor pencils for the colors. After I painted it, I let it dry a bit and then used watered down antique ink to age the paper. It came out nicely and the paper held up well, to the water.
Then today, I decided to over dye some floss. I used rit dye over pinks and purples. I used about 1 part black, 1 part green and 2 parts red. I tend to add colors and when it looks right, I pour it in.

And this is what I ended up with.T he purples go from light to dark shades and the pinks are dark to light. It will be fun to see how they punch up.

Love how the bird design turned out. I got some punch needle designs at a quilt show last year and I really need to take some time to try my hand at making one of them.
I like how the dye made your colors darker...more prim and not so bright.

OMG! I love the punchneedle, it's stunning and that watercolr? Well, let's just say I thought it was an embroidery until I read the post. WOW! I need to learn how to do that, it's awesome. I'm your biggest fan, I just love your "stuff". =)
Your fraktur bird turned out beautiful! And so did your watercolor! You have an abundance of talent and skill. Your flosses have wonderful varigation and I can't wait to see what you create with them. Nice work as usual!

Thanks for your encouragement. You are right, if I get well and miss the class, I would be major bummed out. I love the over-dyed floss. You write such good information that I may be inspired to try some new things! when I feel better, that is.

I love how the bird punch turned out! Do you know what is the thickest floss you can use on weaver's cloth? I've been experimenting with 6 strand floss, and an now wondering if there's anything thicker to use (in a large Cameo punch needle).

I have heard that you can use pearl cottons, but the ones I used were from a yard sale and thicker than what you can buy now. The best way is to experiment and see how the fabric takes different threads.
I am beginning to wonder if it is not the new needles I bought, they seem scratchy and might be cutting the fabric.
