BOM's and New Cross Stitch

I found a free Block of the month and decided to do them for fun. It is nice to make something each month and then at the end of the year, I can put them together and have a nice gift to give for the holidays. I might add some birds to the tree, it seems bare to me;) I am mixing fabrics and wool on this one, some pieces are just too small for me to turn under and I am lazy. You can find the pattern, if you would like to do it, at Angie's bits n' pieces. The pattern can be found at the bottom of the page and is called, Simple Thymes.

I wanted to make a cross stitch piece, something to put in a small frame, but no patterns. So, I made up my own and this is what I came up with. Now that I have done it and realized where I went wrong, I can make a larger version to frame with the whole saying on it. I think it looks nice on my new side table in my bedroom and my Betsy mouse that I won, looks wonderful in the grouping.

Here is a closer look. I did this the old fashioned way, with graph paper and adjustments as I went. Not perfect, but not bad for my first try;) I have books coming in to the library, with colonial patterns, so I can improve on my designs for a new one, when I get them.

  4. I use tsukineko walnut ink on my pieces. I mix it with water since it is stronger than most. Then I just spray it on and put it in the dryer on a rack, to dry it. You can put it in the sun too, when it is warm out.

  6. I love your cross stitched piece and you did a wonderful job designing and stitching it. I've been working on finishing up some that I started, I get them stitched and don't turn them into a bowl filler or frame them - I like the sitting part! ~Ann

  9. Hi!
Thanks so much for the kind words on my blog about Blues Chapel and Last Words! Nice stitching....and....yes, cats learn bad habits too quickly! Mine sit on whatever I've touched most recently or whatever they think I'll be needing soonest!

  10. I love the cross stitch! I have an old pamphlet of colonial samplers. Sometimes just one piece of the sampler or style of alphabet would be fun to use on a small piece. Are there any online programs that allow you to design, without using paper?

  11. There is a pc stitch program and you can try the demo. I haven't really gotten a chance to try it out much and you can't print out, which is what I wanted to try, to see if it printed clearly. I like the idea of turning my designs into cross stitch, would be fun.
