New England Seaport Painting

I used to tole paint a lot and thought I would share one of my older pieces with you.
I made this for my husband to hang his mugs on, but then realized the pegs were too big.
Maybe I will redo the pegs with my antique nails. We still need to finish our cellar some day and it has walls, but a cement floor.
My dream would be to design it like the old captains quarters, but I will be happy to just finish it off;)
I am not the best painter in the world, but I do like this piece. It has been knocked down, one too many times and the last time it broke, so my husband reglued it, and I hung it back on the wall for now.

This is from an old painting book I had. I took two of the pictures and changed them around to fit the chalkboard.

  1. I love the painting! I've never learned how to tole paint, but would love to learn ~ just don't know where to begin. Are there any good books or websites to learn?

  2. Love it Debbie. I gave up the painting too. I enjoy the fibers so much more. Perhaps one day I'll get back into it for a piece here and there. I still kept one piece that I plan on finishing. when? that's the question lol.

  3. I bought books from the craft store with patterns I liked. Most good books have instructions with drawings on the more detailed items. Donna Atkins has some nice epatterns that would be fun to do.

  8. Debbie - that is BEAUTIFUL! I was just on the Cape yesterday, and in Portsmouth, NH last week, and it's so "New Englandy!" You did a great job on it. It would look awesome wth antique nails if the pegs are too big. Thanks for the mention of the books - that was sweet of you :)... Donna

  11. Ah, Debbie! This is a great painting - I just love it! Were your ancestors sea captains? I saw a documentary on the history channel about whaling over the weekend, and wondered if it was from your area?

  12. Dixie,
Yes they were, my ancestors were the first whalers and taught the others in New England their methods.

  13. Very nice painting and what a nice keepsake for your husband. It looks like a Betty Caithness pattern? I too have things that have been dropped and bumped too many times!
