Lucky Me!

Last week, I found out I was the winner of the giveaway hosted by Primitive Handmades Mercantile. They are a new group of primitive artists who sell on a monthly basis. I hope you visit their site and check out the talented artists, maybe find a gift for yourself or a a friend.

I received three prizes so far, two more are on their way. I haven't had much time to make myself too much for valentines, so it was wonderful to win this giveaway and have such treasures to display.

I received these three hearts from Susan of Olde Threads. They came in a beautiful package, and have a wonderful prim smell to them. A picture just doesn't do these justice, they are filled with sawdust and the fabrics are wonderfully aged to perfection. I love the way she bundled them and added a key, makes a wonderful grouping.

The second prize I received was two hand hooked pillows, made by Kathy of Woolfind's Keepsakes. They are in a hit or miss style, but she blended the colors so beautifully, a perfect match to go with any grouping I have, so something I can use all year round, just love them.

And third, but not least is a set of three primitive hearts. These were made by Teresa of Teresa's Prim Treasures. They are a deep red and with the added rusty bell and pin, they are perfect for a prim valentine. I love the way she uses the wire to hang them, they are perfect for hanging on my racks.

Guardian angels!

I treated myself to a new pattern called Guardian Angels. I thought it was nice as a gift idea and they can be used for ornaments for next Christmas. The pattern is by Bird Brain Designs. She also has some nice free designs.

I made the first two, like the pattern, with batting wings. The thing I didn't like was, the stitching shows through the batting on the other side, so I don't feel it is a very neat finish. I antiqued them and put in the dryer, and I like how they held up and how they look, so maybe a double batting to hide the sloppy stitches on the heart.

I have a new computer, and the photoshop upgrade, so I can use my new camera now. I still need to practice with settings and getting the photos to look the way I want, so I hope they look nice on your computer.

The second pair, I went with extra colors and like how they look. I also used fabric and a piece of batting to make the wings. I also stitched the body using thread and running it along the outer stitch to hid it. I think it has more substance to them and a lot neat on the back side.

Curiouser and Curiouser!

I don't know what is sillier, my collection of cats or my real kitties.
Moki seems to spend half of his time at the sink, either drinking or washing and sometimes just playing.
Today he decided he needed a bath.

And I redid the photo I lost. This is from a collection called Comic and Curious Cats. I started collecting them, then decided I had enough kitties on my shelves, but sometimes I find something I cannot resist at the thrift. This one is for me. One of these days I will need to make a set up for these types of collectibles, maybe make some trees to go with them.

This week, I received a photo of a wonderful cross stitched piece of my snowman freebie. This piece was done by Cathi of Cathi's Stitching Blog. I love how she did him and the beautiful colors she used. I never got a chance to do him, so it is fun to see him all stitched up.

Comic and Curious Cat and Cardinals!

Last week I finally got myself a new computer. Mine was getting old and I couldn't upgrade anything and everything was slowing down or crashing, so it was time. I use a Mac Book pro and got one with enough to run my programs, since I do love photoshop and I was able to upgrade that too. So, I tried some photos with my new camera and the new photoshop. I have a lot to learn. Like why the photos I did, did not save in the file I wanted them in, lol. So, here are a couple for tonight.

I love to thrift, you never know what you will find and a few weeks ago I found some Comic and Curious cats sitting on the shelf. The kitties on the bench is a piece I loved and had to have it. That one seems to have disappeared in the computer, somewhere. I couldn't just leave this one sitting on their shelf, maybe it will make a nice gift for a cat lover. They are just so fun and pieces that make you smile.

And here is a cardinal who visits every day. I had to get it with a regular lens, so what zoom it had, made it a bit blurry. Today he sat in the other tree, while his mate had a meal, it is so sweet that they watch out for each other. I have been working on my rug, so I will take a photo of that tomorrow.

Winter Birds: Real and Make Your Own!

I found this wonderful pattern and just had to make some.
The pattern for this little Chickadee can be found at Downeast Thunder Farm's blog.
I also noticed she has a new one this week, a duck, perfect for easter packages.
I used a tan wool for mine but I think a textured tan or gray for the body, would be better.
I stuffed mine a bit, before sewing it up, to give it some body.

And outside we have a lot of birds who visit the feeder. Even in the snow, they were busy eating and kicking snow off the feeder. All this beautiful snow and rain on monday, doesn't seem fair;)

Cardinals and Puppies... Free Patterns!

I found a new blog and she has some wonderful tutorials and templates that you can make for yourself or as gifts. The site Apine Industriose has some english, but you will have to figure out the patterns by yourself, but most are simple and easy to follow along with the templates and the color photo. I am not sure if I did the cardinal the right way, but my gusset didn't make sense, so i cut it down a bit. I made a few changes and added wings to mine. I have decided to put some cardinals and other winter birds, around the house for a simple decoration. We are getting siding put on and they bang all day, so I had to take things off the walls and the house is a mess. The birds are something simple I can make and enjoy without having to worry about them breaking.

I also found the puppy template and instructions on her site. Just click on the link for animali and it is on the first pages. It is a site, well worth browsing around and clicking on the links, lots of goodies to make. The puppies have magnets in them, so a good idea for gift giving too.

Valentine Heart Freebie!

I was in the mood to make another heart and did up a little doodle to stitch on it.
I used two strands of floss and a stem stitch. When I was done, I cut out around the stitches and sewed it, right sides together to a piece of wool. Slit an opening on the back of the wool and fill it, then I covered it with a wool heart and a blanket stitch. A nice simple project that you can whip up in a night.

Kitty Helpers and Rug Progress!

I started cleaning up the christmas decorations, a bit at a time and of course the kitties have to help. Nothing like a plastic bag to amuse them.

And once Moki got bored of playing, Izzy had to try it out. Then Moki went into his stalker mood and Izzy did her screaming routine until he stopped harassing her.

And I worked on my rug, the tree is done and two birds. I ran out of colors, think I used the wrong ones in the wrong places, but that is ok. I will work the background from the outside and inside the motifs. That way if I run out of colors, I can substitute easier.

New Project: Hand Hooked Rug

I have found myself missing rug hooking and thinking of finishing one I was making for my bedroom, when a surprise box arrived the other day. My good friend Cyndi was cleaning out her stash and gifted me with some new rug patterns, as well as some cross stitch patterns from Primitive Betty.

Not only did she send the patterns, but two were kits and one has all the wool cut for it. Now I could not resist that, no hassle rug making, just hook and enjoy the process. It is also one of my favorite subject matters, Noah's ark, so that is what I started this weekend. The pattern is by Mad Hen Primitives and comes with all the wool I need. They are all quality, hand dyed wools, so it is a pleasure to hook with them. I think I might have messed up with the tree colors and used the bird's pieces, so I will hook the bottom ones last, when I see what I have left from the tree area. The birds are dark browns with a mix of other colors, so I can always pull out some dark pieces from the tree and replace them with the lighter shades. The wool is marked for each piece, but the tree had the bird bundle mixed in with it. Now I am thinking I might go with a folk art biblical theme in my bedroom and hang this on the wall, now I need to come up with a quilt that will match it all.

Moki and the Moon!

I have been working on a secret project, so I can't show you anything;)
And here is why I have no fun pictures of Moki lately. He has taken over the tower, he is king of the hill and lets poor Izzy know it. If he is zonked out, she can usually sneak into the bottom bed.

I love the sky in winter, we had a beautiful sunset and the moon was out early. I love to go out at night and just stare up at the stars, a nice way to relax and center ourselves.

Valentine Heart!

I decided I should make something for valentines, and this is what I decided to do. The embroidery pattern is a free pattern from Andrea Zuill of Badbirds. She has some wonderful designs if you go back in her archives. I have another to make and then one with just birds, great for winter/spring decorating. I shaped mine into a heart pillow, and used jute to hang it. Something fun to sew, while you watch tv;)

The stitchery pieces I do are always by hand, using dmc floss. My machine does embroidery, but I haven't figured it out yet and I would use that for home decor, prims and gifts, I like to do by hand. Also, if you have a question and you are a no reply, I cannot answer you.

Soar Pincushions!

I decided it was time to make this pattern, since I won it over a year ago. It was from a Blackbird Designs contest and this was in my prize package. It really was fun to do and I actually did chain and stem stitches, the right way, for once;)

The pattern is by Kathy Schmitz, I just love her designs and would love to do more of hers. I started these yesterday and finished today, so they work up fast and great idea for gift giving. You can follow her blog for new designs or visit her etsy shop.

I used tea stained muslim and the floss is a dark shade, 2021, so not as light and glossy as it looks in the photo.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and have a Happy New Year.
For me, this year is the year to finish projects, I have started and create with all of the wonderful prizes I have won and gifts given by friends. I am truly blessed and plan to make time to make time for myself and for charity quilts this year.

One of the things I started last year was a wool quilt. I have all the blocks sewn, except one, so it is just a matter of finishing that and embellishing the ones I made. The blocks are all different sizes, so I will be putting them on a background wool, that I have made to size and then filling in the empty spaces with scrap wool pieces. Sort of a crazy quilt, and a scrap quilt, so we shall see how it comes out;)

I looked in my old files and only saw one photo of a couple of blocks, so I will share a few more tonight and later when they are all embellished, I will do a group shot and progress. I have no idea what I am doing, just making them, sewing them and seeing what becomes of it.

I hope that all of you and your families have a wonderful New Year that is filled with blessings.

The blocks are made from various patterns in books and a bit of my own, no one designer, I just used what I like.

I really enjoyed reading everyone's comments and suggestions. I do love to create and it will give me ideas to play with and maybe some new patterns in the coming year. One of my gifts this year was an ipad 2, and I got an app called Sketchbook pro. You can get it as a free app with basics, or this week it is only 1.99, well worth buying, it is a wonderful drawing and painting program. My son and DIL got me a nice stylus, so now I can practice drawing with it.

And today was one of those days that I should not have tried something new, my brain is mush. I wanted to make an ipad case that opens but my first attempt didn't work, so I went with a simple case for now, and still made a mess, lol. 300 Followers! Giveaway Tomorrow!

I came on this morning and saw that I now have 300 followers. Have no idea why anyone wants to read my dribble, but I do enjoy and appreciate all of my followers and the wonderful comments. So, I guess in honor of my 300 followers and all the giveaway goodness that I have received this year, I will be having a giveaway tomorrow.

For those of you who ask me a question and have a no reply, I cannot answer you.
I am frequently asked if I sell things, yes I do and sometimes I sell what I show, so you can ask;)
This year I need some me time, still fighting off symptoms and I have my good and bad days, but at least I have good days, so I take that as a hopeful sign, that someday I will get better. I want to work on new patterns and creating, so look for new things this year.

This is a sled I painted a long time ago. It had gotten dirty in the basement, so I cleaned it up and antiqued it a bit. His beard was done with textured snow paint.

I made up a couple of small things this week to have in case I have unexpected company.
I always like a little something that I can give, just in case. If not, they will be for someone next year;)

The appliques I used for the pillows are from Cheri Saffiote Payne in her older book, 301 Christmas quilt blocks. You can still get copies of her two older books on ebay for good prices, and they are great for making gifts as well as some beautiful projects, that I will make someday.

These ornies I made up from a pattern on Create and Decorate. I found the pattern in their section for pattern corrections. It was for additional snowflake patterns in the December 2011 link. I used the snowflakes and made up some more penny ornies. I liked the patterns on these, nice designs to do up and a nice idea for next year, to add one inside a card or to a package.

Kitties get an early Christmas!

Today we went out shopping, did I get myself anything, no....
We got Casey a present and a new bird feeder and seed and the kitties got an early present.
At first Moki was afraid of it, had no idea what it was, but Izzy dug her claws in and started climbing.

Once moki realized it wasn't going to attack him, and saw Izzy having fun, he had to join in.

Once Moki got into the game, Izzy found she could reach the top and hide from moki.

I am not sure who is the biggest trouble maker, Izzy for instigating things or moki, who gets carried away and thinks Izzy is his personal play toy. But, they both love it and he takes the lower perch and she takes the higher and they are content to sleep in the same area for once. Later I will move it to a better spot, but for now, they can stay there and also watch the birders when the new feeder goes up. Maybe now they will leave my rugs alone;)

Old fashioned Christmas Quilt!

I hesitated showing my new piece, the flash really did a job on the colors and look.
I made this stitched piece last year and put it in a frame, but I wanted to make it into a mini quilt.
I decided to go with plaid for a border, just seemed to fit the look and then I added stitched snowflakes.
I did a blanket stitch around the outside, but it is hard to see, I really need to start using my good camera and learning how to use the functions.

Christmas sewing marathon!

Today I was busy sewing up pillows, antiquing and stuffing. I wanted to make some pillows stuffed with crushed balsam to put into packages, so that is what I did. I had the tree applique made first and today I finished those and made some quickie pillows. The tree appliques are fun to make, quick and easy, just cut up scraps of triangles and whip stitch them onto a backing. I used wool for the stem. I got some buttons to add to the trees. The other pillows are some old and some new christmas fabrics and I stained them to age them.

These pillows I made with fabric I found at Jo anns. I thought it would be fun and faster to use pre printed fabric, but I didn't realize that the designs are a bit skewed, but I tried to sew them straight, so they didn't come out too bad. I aged these, as well.

This is the original fabric, a lot brighter and whiter. I do like the design and have enough to make a nice lap quilt for next year, good practice for my quilting skills too.

And for myself, I repurposed these old ornaments. I washed them with soapy water and then antiqued them. Then I made a little tube from scrap fabrics and filled that with the balsam and put that inside the stocking. Then I hung them on a rack, so I have fresh pine smell in the house. Notice the date, that is when these were originally made.

Free Christmas Cross Stitch Patterns!

This week I updated my PC Stitch program and realized I had some patterns I was playing with last year.
I made a few changes and kept them simple, so you can make them into quick little pillows. I hope you enjoy them and would love to see your finished pieces. I have not tried them, so I hope they work up without any problems.

Christmas quilt, punch needle and Izzy!

I finished two more pieces today. The first is a free pattern called Home for Christmas by Hatched and Patched. It was a fun piece to make and I used wool for the applique to make it easier. My tongues are a bit whonky though.

The second is my snowman punch, I ended up making it into a pillow. I like how it came out and pillows are nice since you can sit them on shelves or use in bowls and baskets. The design is by Brenda Gervais.

The kitties are being their usual obnoxious selves, pulling down garland, walking off with candy canes and knocking down anything in their path;) And sometimes they are quiet and find a nice cozy place to sleep.

( Sidenote ) For those of you who voted for Dora in the kitty contest, I want to thank all of you. She won second place in the voters choice, so I will be getting some new fat quarters, thread and a round cutter!

Gingerbreads, Baskets and Berries!

I have been decorating and that means, digging out old things and reinventing them.
I found this wooden box in a sale rack and it I decided it was perfect to add some greenery to. I picked up the garland after Christmas so a big savings and it is perfect to put in containers and then primp up boughs to fill it out. Then I decided to try some gingerbread men from a free pattern from Primitive Quilts and Projects. I traced the design out a bit smaller and wider and used wool to make the details. I used a coffee muslim and then stained them with java ink. My gingerbread men look as whacky as if I tried making real ones;) I have it sitting on an antique stool, but put it here for the photo. I had to lighten the photo, they are much darker in person. I will add some red berries when I find some more.

I also went shopping, sometimes we want something new or in this case, something old. I found this old basket in a consignment store. The original price had been marked down four times, so I got a good deal. It was perfect to sit on an empty chair and fill it with greenery. I used another garland and then cut some pine boughs from my neighbors yard;) Then I cut some red berries and added those, so it makes a nice grouping for the basket. And as you can see, Moki likes it too. Nothing like the smell of fresh pine;)

Birds and Braids!

I found this free pattern on Wee Folk Art and thought it would be a fun and fast project. I wanted to use it as a holder for my crushed pine, so instead of stuffing it, I used batting and sewing the crushed pine into the batting. That way I could blanket stitch the piece, without the pine, falling out.

I need rugs and the hooked rugs are getting destroyed by the animals, so I looked online for some new rugs. I did find some I liked, but then I thought, I can make braided rugs, why buy one, lol. Soooo, I got the one I started, and went back to work on it. I use my scrap, heavier wools on braided rugs, so the colors are dependent on what I have. I am trying to keep the blacks and darks mixed in, but pops of color always look nice on a braided rug. I was planning on using it in the living room, not sure yet, but it will be put to use somewhere. Braided rugs are great for obnoxious kitties. Moki loves the one by the back door, he rolls in it, rolls it up and snuggles in it. Now he is inspecting the new one and finding it to his liking;)

Finished Christmas Pieces and Winners!

I finished two pieces this week, they are going to be presents, I sure hope the recipient likes them.
The first is the snow lady I made from a pattern by Primitive Blessings. This is a free pattern and I added a few of my own touches.

The second is a punch needle with a design by Brenda Gervais. This was a free group pattern so it is not available as a pattern, but she does the most wonderful designs. I gave it a light antiquing and added a yarn trim.

And now for the winners! Yes, two winners today. I loved reading all of your answers, it was so fun to see what others saw. I saw a dog with a bonnet on it's head. I am working on finishing some projects so nothing new today.
This weekend we got some nice walks in and I took some photos of some unique items.

Birthday Buys and the Bay!

Today I wanted to go to our folk art store and treat myself. I saw lots of nice things, but I always talk myself out of buying things, lol. I found this panel and thought it would be fun to practice machine quilting on and make a quick quilt for the kids, at least that is the plan;) I may just use the center panel and the rest as pillows, we shall see.

I also saw this Japanese fabric bundle and thought it would be perfect for some of the pieces in the wool book, even though it isn't wool, it would work great for the applique pieces and I have always wanted to try some.

Then we went to the ocean, a place called Black Rock. There is a path that you can walk on that takes you to the main beach and you can go down smaller paths and walk along the rocks.

We walked along the beach for a bit and spied this fellow, he had found a fresh lunch today.

The problem was, he did not like us near and would move off and the ocean would sweep in and carry it away.

Birthday Goodies and a Giveaway for you!

Monday was my birthday and I turned another year older. I had a nice quiet day at home and worked on my new projects. Today I got another surprise box from Kelley, like the box of fabrics wasn't enough. I am really going to have to get going on my regular quilting this year, lots of beautiful new fabrics to work with. She also sent me the wool book that I have been looking for, what a wonderful surprise, love the japanese quilting. I love the punch needle she made me, it will go into my sewing room, she does such beautiful prim pieces. I feel very spoiled;)

Primitive Angel Mini Quilt!

I finished another quilt today. This one I stitched last year and never finished it, so it was time to finish it.
It is a design by Primitive Blessings and I added the snowflakes and Christmas saying. It measures a little less than 12" x 10". Another piece to add to my growing gift box.

Did everyone follow the Henry Glass blog hop? If you missed it, you missed some wonderful patterns for Christmas, but you can still visit the sites and get their patterns. I loved the piece by Little Quilts, a fun redwork piece that would make a nice gift for a friend. Of course I didn't follow the directions and went off on my own, as usual, lol. I am just too lazy to piece those wonderful triangles she made on the original, so I just made mine simple and added some words.

I also made some little penny ornaments with some snowflake designs from my Fa la la la Felt book. I liked the snowflake designs, but now that I see the original pattern I took it from, I might have to make those next;) I used a different blue pen and it does not come out easily, as you can see on these. On the quilt it came out blue too, but I rewashed it and it came out clean, after I dried it. There is no name on it and it was a gift.

Homespun Heaven!

My friend Kelley sent me a surprise box this week, I love surprises.
Kelley has been cleaning out her supplies and books and this is the wonderful fabrics I received this week.
I love homespuns and speciality fabrics and there is lots of those and a lot of future projects I can enjoy making with them.

I finished another punch needle piece, tonight. My friend Cyndi sent me the pattern as a gift, so I decided it was time to make it. If you visit Cyndi's site you will see the rug she made from a custom pattern that I made for her.

I am thinking of making a card holder with it, by attaching the punched piece to a hand made wool card holder. It still needs aging, it is a bit bright. I also need to tweak a few spots, I used 3 strands on the designs and I think I punched a bit too tight.

Have you seen the Henry Glass, Jolly Holiday Party? It is a fun blog hop, prizes and free patterns for the holidays. I already printed out a couple, to make for gifts.

Kitties and Foxes!

Last winter I was lucky enough to win one of Lark Crafts giveaways. I won a calendar with patterns and a lot of wonderful felt. I also won the Fa la la Felt book and was thrilled since it has lots of fun designs and things to make for the holidays. I finally got to make some of the cute penny ornaments and did the kitties and foxes. For now I left them as they are, and later I will either keep them as ornaments, or maybe add them to something. The book also has some christmas trees to make, so lots of fun things i can make as gifts for others. The originals are in felt, but I decide to use wool and make them into pennies, so mine are slightly different. They were fun to make and love how they came out.

I was the lucky winner of one of Linda's wonderful mice in a giveaway that was hosted by Carol of Firecracker Kid Primitives. Linda has a wonderful etsy site called Heartfelt Ornament Co. If you love mice, you will love her little costumed creations. She also has an etsy site called Warmth and she has some wonderful new pieces and sweet Christmas mice, wouldn't it be fun to have a few to tuck into your cubbies. Wool Penny Ornament!

I decided to make some more snowman ornaments, but I used wool this time.
I cut them out free hand, so they are a bit wonky, but that is the fun of prim.
After I sewed the penny together, I cut a slit in the back and put some crushed pine in them, so now they smell like a fresh pine tree. I thought it would be nice to put in a christmas card, hopefully they will fit;)

I ordered the pine from Paine Products. They were easy to order from and fast delivery. The ornament pattern can be found Here! I used a paintbrush and watered down walnut spray to soak into the stitchery and darken the batting. To cover the slit in the back, I added a double penny with a stitched snowflake in the middle.

Moki has been enjoying the nice weather, nothing like the sun to keep him content.

Today we got our new bedroom set, it sure looked smaller in the store, lol.
I have a nice mattress, so we didn't buy one for the new bed. But my mattress is the new extra high ones and even without the bottom half, it is way too high for the new bed. Guess I need to go shopping again, hopefully we can find a sale somewhere, hate to spend too much, but I do need to find something that can support my back and still be soft on my sore bones.

Now I will have to think of a new quilt for the bed. Once we get a normal mattress, it will be easier to make one for this bed, I won't need the longer sides this time. I think the fabric that Barbara Brackman sent me, would make a beautiful quilt for this bed, so now I need to decide on a pattern. For now I am recleaning clothes and putting things away. With the under bed storage I can put extra blankets and sheets and free up some closet room in the bathroom. I guess I need to make curtains too, something simple for a topper.

Hard to get a photo with the right angles, so everything looks cramped in the room. There is a secretary desk in the corner with the flowers and to the right I have my large ladder, that Bill made me. It is also Casey's bed spot, since he sleeps next to me. Maybe I need the ladder to get into bed, lol.

Mini Christmas Hexagons!

After I finished the punch needle, I decided I wanted to make a mini hexagon quilt and use homespuns. I tried to stick with more green and some red, but I don't have much in scraps for those colors and I didn't want to get into my fat quarters for this. I used the accuquilt small hexagon and 1/4" seam. I do not use paper, I mark the seam lines and sew them together. For this one, I used the machine to sew the pieces into rows, then I hand sewed the rows together. I usually sew all my hexagons by hand, but for the straight seam, it seemed to make more sense to save some time and my fingers. I bordered it with greens to keep a Christmas look and used floss to do the tacks. I haven't stained it yet, still trying to decide if I should leave it as is, or maybe add a little snowflake applique or something like that in a corner?

I decided to let one of my old kitties, show it off.

I was in the mood to make a punch needle, and this is a design that was made by Brenda Gervais for our punch needle group booklet. This was in 2007 and I finally got around to making it, lol. It was fun to do and now I am trying to decide what to do with it. I wanted to make it into a quilt, but not sure how that would look as a centerpiece and if I put it on a penny rug, it would be hard for the person, who is getting it, to display anything on it. So, maybe I will just make a pillow or a little hanging bag from it and make a penny rug with appliques.

I tried a close up, really makes the loops look lumpy, lol.

I have been cleaning all day and now I am tired, so forgive the photos, they are photos of old photos, lol. I didn't feel like importing into the scanner and for me it is easier to load them into my computer from the camera.

This is a photo from when I worked in a craft store. In those days I did more tole painting and some cross stitch. I taught a few classes, mostly to kids, they are fun to teach and have no inhibitions. Of course we dressed up for halloween and one of these ladies is me. Guess which one is me, you don't have to be right, I will put all the entries into a drawing. I will pick and announce a winner on wednesday night, November 2. The winner can have their choice of any epattern from my ecrater site.

And here are my kids, doing their best to look sad for me, lol. This was a great costume, easy to wear, easy to walk around in and pajamas after the holiday. Now they are all grown up, and it is photos like this that make me miss those days;)

Christmas snowmen!

I wanted to try some new things and I love the designs in my painting book by Renee' Mullins. The patterns are painted on wood, but I wanted to do one in stitchery and wool. I took the snowflake design and using freezer paper, cut out the snowflake from a 5 1/2" block of wool. Then I did the stitchery on muslin with batting. After I did the stitchery, I attached it to the wool snowflake with a blanket stitch and then added a wool back and did a blanket stitch and now it is a mug rug. It is fun to make designs you like into new things and to experiment. I like the idea of doing this with just a snowflake shape and then appliqueing it onto a quilt or a runner.

Another project I tried is one that I found online at Create and Decorate. This was a fun and easy project, but I think I would rather use wool, to make a stiffer backing. Since I had to turn them and cut a slit in the back, I went with a simple penny and stitched snowflake to cover the sewed hole. I think using wool and making the back into a penny with a simple stitched design is a nice way to have a double sided ornament. And they are small enough to make as a gift to add in a christmas card.

Christmas Punch Needle!

This week I received my issue of Primitive Quilts and Projects. One of the patterns was a rug design by Tonya of Mad Hen Primitives. I thought it would be fun to do as a punch needle and this is how mine came out. I kept some colors similar to hers and some of my own, since the original was done in rug wool.

I used some hand dyed floss for the green leaves and for the outer edge, I used scraps from my floss box to get a hit or miss look. I started out with 3 strands of floss for the design, then used 6 strands for the rest.

Christmas Pillows!

I have been working on gifts for Christmas and this time I made a couple of pillows.
The peace pillow is a design by Lisa Bongean. The kit was gifted to me by my friend Sharon, it was fun to work with a kit and not have to think about what to use.

The second pillow is a pattern by Nancy Conn and was a featured pattern in the new Primitive Quilts and Projects magazine. Tonight I am working on another pattern from the book, in a punch needle piece.

Then I refinished one last halloween pillow. I had it made and sewed it backwards and resewed it backwards the second time, this time I got it right, lol. The pattern is by Tiffany of Primitive Blessings.

Christmas or Halloween Block?

Sometimes I get carried away with staining and when I use the Java, I have to be more careful. The first time, it came out too dark, all over. So, I rinsed it out and redried it and this is what happened, a bit spooky for a nativity piece, lol. Guess I need to rinse it out more and add walnut this time, the black tends to pull in as it dries and leaves splotches, which is nice on some pieces, but not what I planned for this one;) As you can see, with java, which is a black stain, it leaves green marks too, which gives it a more aged look. Would like to leave the dark on the rest, but try and get rid of the skeleton marks, which happened totally by accident.

Bible Block

I wanted to make something creative and different, so I tried a block from one of Harriet Powers bible quilts. I kept some of the colors similar and added my own ideas to make it brighter, since this is the nativity scene and I will use it as a christmas piece. I want to add a saying to go with it, so I have to decide how I want to do it, then I plan on antiquing it heavily so it will look old and not so bright. Not the best photo, the flash makes it look like it is all standing out and really emphasizes my bad stitching, lol.

Bad kitty and pumpkin tree!

Today while I was sewing, I heard a strange noise and went to look. This is what I found, someone was a very bad kitty. There was a mocking bird sitting on the porch rail and I think he was on the porch and Moki made a lunge for him, ugh. The funny thing is, Moki was just sitting there staring at the hole, he had no intentions of going outside.

I found this black tree at Jo anns, for a couple of dollars so couldn't resist. Today I decided I needed to make something to put on it, so this is what I came up with. I made funny faces to look like vintage pumpkins and used a green yarn for the stem hanger. Then I got tired of making those, so thought a few leaves would be easier to fill up more area. I took a photo here, since it has more light. I put it on my furkin with an old lace doily. The eyes are mini buttons that you can get in the craft stores.

Reindeers Finished!

I finally finished my reindeer piece. I added the word joy, but couldn't picture adding more words, so I went with snowflakes. Not really what I planned, but it will have to be good enough. I tend to make things and if I don't like them, that's life, I hate redoing things;) I think this would be fun to do in a smaller piece with wools or as a punch needle too. Maybe I will give this one to my daughter. I took a night photo, so kept it cropped so you could see the details better. The right side is the same and there is a darker red border on the sides. I didn't realize the other red was more pink but I actually like the shade with the yellowed homespun and blacks. If you like the design, you can get it from Jan Patek Quilts.

Tomorrow I will try and do an outdoor shot and see if I can get true colors.

I wanted to try a video of the kitties and Izzy was in a playful mood. I thought I might be able to take video and use one of the frames as a photo, but they were all fuzzy, so need to figure that one out. Izzy is a jumper and will go to any length to catch things. It is hard to throw and shoot, so I will have to try cat nip next time;)

As you can see at the end, she stays away from Moki, who sits and gives her the look, he likes to intimidate her. Now that Dora is not harassing him, he has taken that position in the house.

Reindeer Progress!

I did some more work on my reindeers. I added the birds and used buttons for eyes.
I decided to make collars on the reindeer and used rusty bells for a fun touch. I added buttons on the tree and still not happy with my tree, so will have to think about that. The next step is to add the border, I am just going with the border on mine, not the stars on the top. Then the batting and some black outline stitch and maybe a christmas greeting around the tree area. The pattern is by Jan Patek.

Projects and Winner!

I decided to hang my fabric on the line, I didn't bother washing it, it smells fine, lol.
Plus when I use it in a prim project, it will probably end up getting stained again.
By letting the sun pull the dye into the fabric, I got some nice dark spots, a few areas of green from the black dye and an overall aged look. If you are looking for a true antique look, this is it. Most antiques are aged by weather and water and this is what happens;)

I plan on using some in a jean quilt, so the lighter is good for that and some will go as backings or wool applique backing.

I am also working on a Christmas project. This is a design by Jan Patek. Next I need to add the birds and then decide what extra touches I might add. I was thinking some words and maybe some rusty bells on a few antlers. I really wish I could figure out my lighting better to get the true prim look of my fabrics. Even if I take it outside, I can't get the true look, outside my photos tend to go blue, inside they go red or yellow. Eventually I will read my camera book and figure it out;)

Walking and Dying in the Sun!

Yes, I had to enjoy one more day out in this beautiful weather. It was warm again, but at least the breezes kept me cooler this time.

I hope you enjoy my walk at Rome Point. It is a wonderful area to walk, trails in the woods and walks on the beaches and coves, so a lot of scenic variety.

Low tide is a great time to go clamming.

The coves are beautiful this time of year and the seagulls were all enjoying a swim in the inlets.

This guy was enjoying a walk on the rocky shores, looking for clams to open. I think he was hoping we would toss him a snack.

I had some extra java solution, so I left it in a pan on the porch. The sun is evaporating the liquids which draws the colors into the cloth. Hopefully it will also set, well enough to stay on when I wash it.

A Day at the Lighthouse!

Today I was tired, from yesterday, so a good day to rest. So, I went shopping and got some needed supplies with my coupons. Then I came home and it was way to nice to sit in the house, so I decided it would be a nice day for a drive to Jamestown, and visit the Beavertail Lighthouse.

It was really hot today and even on the ocean the sun was beating down on us, but it was too beautiful out, not to enjoy a walk around the cliffs.

This is the Narragansett bay side, the land across the bay is the area where I grew up.

The opposite side of the point, faces Newport. As you can see, a lot of boats were out today and a lot needing help. The barge is being pushed by a tug and the boater had engine trouble, so they were getting ready to be towed by the boaters version of triple A.

On the road back there is another area called Fort Getty. From this point you can see Dutch Island and the Light House. Another beautiful day and lots of walking and too much heat and beating myself to death again, but it was worth it;)

Fabric and Fall Fun and Giveaway!

Last week I won some wonderful fabric from Corrie at Quilt Taffy. Corrie has a wonderful ebay store and a place I have gotten my special issues of Quiltmania from. She has wonderful sales, so worth keeping in your favorites and she is always having a giveaway, so make sure you visit and sign up for her blog.

I stole this photo from her site, since it has a better view of all the fabrics. I can't wait to use them, they have a wonderful vintage look to the shades and I am trying to decide what I can make with them. I would like to make something for my kids, they both work at jobs working with computers, so thinking if I can come up with something that would be good for a guy and a girl that they might be able to use at work or something fun at home. Give me some suggestions or links to free patterns that I could use them on and I will pick a name from all of the comments on tuesday night, for a free epattern.

The shades look lighter here, but they have a muted vintage look in person.

Today was a beautiful day and I got the bright idea to go for a trail walk, to the falls. We started from the middle area this time, for a shorter walk, which took us a long the old road and then onto the trail area.

My body was not being agreeable and my bones got really stiff, but I kept going, I am a glutton for punishment, lol. But it was worth it, to get to the falls and we took a break and had a snack and rested.

Great place to sit and this is the view of the area, from the opposite side.

We walked along this side to the bridge, which crosses back to the main trail. There are a lot of bridges crossing along the path, since there are a few small creeks that run down the hills, especially when it rains heavily. Coming back was a little easier, I guess I got my second wind finally. Tomorrow will be another hot and beautiful day, maybe a good day for an ocean walk.

Last but not Least!

I received my final prize for the PAFA giveaway and as with all of my prizes, it is wonderful and more than I expected. I thought it was a door hanger, this is huge so I had to give it a special place with my fall display. This wonderful burlap display was made by Tammy of A Primitive Place. I like the fact that it is large enough to go on my large bureau, but can be hung on a door too. You can visit Tammy at her website too, she has a lot of wonderful prims and antiques for sale, if you are looking for something new for you or as a gift for a friend.

Now all I need is for the leaves to turn on my neighbors tree and I have a perfect view for fall;)

New Fall items!

I received another of my wonderful gifts from the PAFA giveaway. This one was a scarecrow by Laura of Cave Creek Primitives. He is so wonderful, I just love it, she did such a beautiful job on all of the wonderful details. You should also check out her Etsy Store, she has a lot of unique prims at great prices.

I had a burlap piece on the wall, where I placed him and he needed something to fit the season. So, I made a new piece for fall. It is a design by Terri Dogenkolb, of Whimsicals, from her Pumpkin and Spices book. The original was an oval pillow shape, so I added some extra leaves and acorns to fit into a rectangle.

I love how it looks together and the picture does not do, either, any justice, so much better in person. I had to lighten it up a bit, and it took away from the tea stained wools, and left the rest a bit dark.

A day with the Kids!

Today we went shopping for health food, I have a special diet so I go there for some things and got some cats claw to try, heard it is good for lyme and heals a million other things, so we shall see;)

My son and DIL came by, so we took them on our walk with us. It was a bit muddy but still a perfect day for walking. It was nice to relax and enjoy having the kids over for dinner and just talking. I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. I worked on a fall piece and hoping I can finish it tomorrow.

New Hexagons and Giveaway Goodies!

I finally finished my other runner, this one will fit in more spaces in my house, and I made it so I can place things on it for Christmas decorating. I made a mess of the border and wondering, am I supposed to put batting there too, or maybe that is why my borders are so stiff. On a quilt I can see it, but now that I have done these, I realize, it might be just put batting in the design area, since I don't do any quilting on the border?

I also wanted this to look antique, so I soaked it in tea and then gave it a spray of walnut to darken it more. Of course with the camera, it is hard to see the aged look, but I tried to get it, the best I could. It is nothing fancy, this was actually my first piece, all hand cut, hand sewed and no guide for the seams, so they are not perfect.

Here it is, a little closer and lighter, so you can see the aged look a bit better. And if you are wondering, someone made me the pear as a gift and I made the strawberries. I wish I had more of that wool, makes great strawberries. But what I have left, has to go in a rug I have yet to finish;)

And I also got a surprise package today. For some reason I thought I had won a few pieces of fabric, and was so surprised at all the goodies I got. This was a giveaway, hosted by Cindy of Yankee Valley Stitcher. I love the fabric she sent me. I have been thinking of making some more crib type quilts and this fabric reminds me of the ones on old doll cradles. I even have a pattern that I found that would be perfect for it. And if you know me and scissors, I am always needing a new pair, I love this pair, just the right size and weight for clipping and cutting when I hand sew. I use blue markers for my stitcheries, so it will be fun to try a new brand out, not thrilled with the ones I get. The tape measure is also something I need, now I don't have to roll mine up every time I want to measure something and a notebook and a package with all types of note and stickies to use while I work. What a wonderful package to win, all the things I use and need and wonderful fabric, Cindy really outdid herself with her giveaway.

New Halloween Goodies!

I want to thank everyone for their wonderful comments and support. It means a lot to me that so many care and understand what I am going through.

Yesterday I also received two new wonderful items from the PAFA giveaway. The Scaredy Cat was donated by Donna of Countryside Cottage. He is a lot bigger than I realized and I love him. He is beautifully made and has a wonderful cinnamon scent. She also has him in her Etsy Shop and at a really great price.

The second piece is Pumpkin pie with a crow on him and I really love this piece too. I have seen these done by prim artists and have always wanted one, so I was thrilled that Ami of Folk Art Primitives offered this wonderful piece as a prize. She has lots of wonderful primitive pieces for the fall at her Etsy Shop.

I place them on my bench for the photo, but these two pieces are on top of an old wooden piece, way out of reach of curious kitties;)

I received two more items this week and I wanted to share them with you. I think it is wonderful that these girls gave their time and a creation to support their PAFA Group and I hope you will visit their blogs and see their wonderful creations.

I love bowl fillers and when I saw Valerie's acorns, I knew I had to have them. They are perfect for my trencher on my dining table. Visit her at Yorkie's Primitives to see some wonderful primitive creations that she also sells in her etsy shop.

Carol of Firecracker Kid Primitives had a prize for the giveaway, as well. I have been the lucky winner of her rolling pin shelf and I love it, so I knew I had to have her newest item, a cat eared herb rack. It is so much nicer in person and I need to make some things to hang from it. The kitties on it now, are from my friend Joanne, she knows I love prim kitties. But my kitties love dangly things, so they will go back on the peg rack which is out of the real kitties reach.

I also went through my box of UFO's and found this punch needle, that I had forgotten about. I decided to put some double tape on the back of the folded over weavers cloth, not on the punched area. I learned the hard way to never do that;) Now I have a new piece to enjoy for now and then it can come down and later I can make it into a permanent piece for next year. The wonderful cross stitch piece, was made by my friend Sharon. I am truly blessed and hope that I can pay it forward later this year.

My lucky Week!

Sometimes on my worst days, something wonderful happens and it makes my day, so much brighter.
Sunday was one of those days, I spent most of the day in my chair, sewing and sore as heck from a long walk and falling on the path. But, that day I got an email from Brenda at A Rusty Thimble, telling me that I had won first prize in the PAFA giveway. Talk about being thrilled to win prim goodies, but I didn't realize as first place winner, I got first pick, of seven, of the prizes that I wanted.

PAFA is a wonderful group of primitive artists and it was hard picking out seven from all of the wonderful prizes. Today I got my first prize in the mail and it is wonderful. It is a halloween potion bag and has a wonderfully wicked smell to it, lol. I picked this one, since it is something I don't make and it will look wonderful with a grouping of the other items I got. The bag was made by Brandy of The Lil' Prim Cabin. She did a wonderful job on the bag, love the materials she used and the fun label. I took a photo of it here, for now, then I can put my items in a grouping when they all get here.

I found a template online and used the inside dimensions of the 2", then added the quarter inch to make it smaller. I was looking for a one inch tumbler, but didn't see any. I sewed the pieces by hand, but decided to sew the rows by machine;) Also the border was machine sewed, but the rest I hand stitched with floss. It is a fun project to do and I think it would be fun to do in Christmas colors too. Great way to use up those scraps and great gift idea for friends. I do have a Go tumbler die and plan on making a large one for myself.

This piece measures a little over 11" x 8". I also stained it with walnut spray, after it was finished.

Hexagons, Halloween and Hokie Mokie!

I finished my hexagon topper, at least I think I did. Should I or shouldn't I, tea stain it?
I hand sewed them together, so they are not perfect. I learned from making these, to mark my 1/4 mark on the back, so I could sew more evenly;) It is all hand sewn except for the border, which I attached by machine. It measures 22 1/2" from end to end and the hexagons are 1 1/2". This is a great lap or traveling project and by using smaller hexagons, you can make a lot of different design variations.

Here is a close up of the stitching. I used black pearl cotton and stitched inside of each hexagon. I used my new camera, so the colors are better, but I still need to learn how to use the settings to get true color shots. The feather stitch was done with some of my hand dyed floss, so it goes from dark to light green. I am not sure if I will use it for a topper, not sure if I have a table it will fit, lol. I think it would make a nice base for a prim, table top tree.

I took out some decorations and threw them on the table;) I took the rag balls I had and just added orange and gold fabrics around what I had, so they would be bigger and I could use less fabric, that way. Plus, when I am done with fall, I can take it off and they will be red and green again;) The wonderful candle mat was made by my friend Kelley.

Future projects!

I am still working on my hexagons. I finished the stitching, but I decided to add a feather stitch along the outside border edge, so half way done on that. So, I thought I would show you some wonderful things that I received this week.

First of all I received a wonderful surprise today, from Barbara Brackman. She wanted to send me some "Stuff", lol. Well I think this is more than a few pieces of fabrics, it is enough to make a bed sized quilt for me. This is the new fabric, 1862 Battle Hymn by Barbara Brackman and Moda fabrics. I love this fabric, love the colors and love the prints. It is exactly what I was thinking of, when I envisioned a quilt for my bed. So now I need to decide on a pattern and I plan on taking my time and doing a nice job on this quilt. I have loved blues and tans, so with this color scheme, time to change my bedroom;)

If you have never been to Barbara's blog, please do visit, you won't be disappointed. She always has such wonderful quilts on her blog, with histories about the quilts and fabrics. A wonderful way to learn more about dating your quilts. She also has a blog with a block of the week for Civil War quilts, which also has history and stories of the era. And if that is not enough, she has a new blog about Quilts from the war of 1812. You can view this fabric line at the Moda Website, it is truly perfect for those who love prim and civil war era quilting. They also have wonderful free patterns from the designers.

I folded some of the fabric over, on the layer cake, so you could see more of the patterns in the line.

A second surprise I got last week, was that I won the book, "Welcome to the North Pole ," by Piece of Cake Designs. I won the book from Kay Mackenzie, who has written several wonderful books on applique, herself. Kay has a wonderful blog for the applique lover, full of inspiration and tutorials, so visit Kay's blog to say hello, check out her great tutorials or be inspired by her quilting.

This is the cover of the book, it has a wonderful quilt with all types of Christmas buildings and appliques that you can use in different ways, to make the quilt your own.

I love the smaller pieces on the back of the cover, something I should be able to do before Christmas and I know my daughter would love one of these. I can even customize them, just for her. I had wanted this book and our library copy disappeared. But the great news is you can get it from Martingale & Company, if you would like your own copy.

New Camera!

My new camera came today and I was thrilled. He even gave the battery and charger with it, so I was happy. Then I realized it didn't have a card, not so thrilled, especially when I saw the prices. But, I did have my old camera and yes, it is the same kind of card, so I have a memory card. Now I am all set and took some practice shots. But wait, how do I get the photos in, no computer cord, ugh. But, luckily my minolta uses the same size cord too, so I could put them in. Found out my Mac is too old to upload any software to use it. So I hooked it up to my Dell and it went right in without any drivers, but I prefer to use my mac since that has photoshop. Guess a new Macbook is on my wish list;)

The camera is really complicated, way too many buttons, but I was able to download a pdf manual. It is also heavy, so I will probably have to use a tripod to get good photos indoors, all my shots came out blurry. I also don't see a flash, no idea where that is, have a feeling I have to buy one to mount on top. But for free, I am not complaining, will just have to save up for extras.

I definitely won't be taking this out in the kayak, glad I got the pocket waterproof camera. I think I need to make a sling pocket for it, so when I go hiking at the sanctuaries, I can carry it without the band choking my neck.

This is the best photo I could get today. It is an older piece that I have in the house. The sun has been fading the edge. I did have to put it through photoshop, but I got better and more true colors and this was on a low setting. At least now, you can see more detail and the patterns of the wool, so I hope I can figure this out and get some better shots of my pieces.

Today I worked more on my hexagons, hand stitching the inside of each hexagon, but on the outer edges now, so hopefully I will have it done tomorrow.

Noah's Ark Progress!

I have been working on finishing my Noah's Ark and still working.
I did an outline stitch in black around the appliques and adding some embellishments as I go and will finish those off next.
Once I get the border on, then I will decide if I want to add more, I was thinking of adding a stitchery saying going through the empty spots, but will have to figure that one out, then decide.

Hard to take a photo with flash at night and hard to get it all in one, without being too small, so I have three shots, some better than others, I am a bit shaky tonight;)

This is the middle section, I got a bit carried away with my monkeys, lol. Noah now has a tool box and Mrs. Noah is bringing in supplies. I think I might add some strands of yarn for the sitting goose, needs something underneath her.

I gave the zebras some manes and added some new critters to the right.

And to the left, more new critters and finishes, details needed on some. I was told today that my good camera should be here on monday, so I hope i can get better indoor shots with the new one. This will be going over a double door, so higher up and I wanted more color and things that pop out, so it shows when it gets placed on the wall. Plus I am just silly lately;)

Quilt Album Review and Giveaway!

One of the biggest questions asked by quilt lovers is: "Who made it, when did they make it and what pattern did they use?". Well now there is a program for quilters and textile artists to document their creations along with the important details about the quilt called Quilt Album. Another bonus, it can be used on Windows or the Mac operating system.

Not only can you document your own quilts, but you can also add photos from quilts that you have seen at shows or in magazines, to use as reference or inspiration. How many times have you seen a quilt you like and then forgotten where you had found it or who designed the pattern. Now you will always have that information, at the click of a button.

Quilt Album not only documents your quilt, but you can also print out the pages to make your own album, that you can share with others. There are also features that allow you to make cards, labels, business cards and address labels.

Quilt Album comes in two ways, as a cd or you can choose an instant download. I used the instant download and I was amazed at how fast the download was and easy to install. It is so easy, that I never had to read the manual. I was able to add quilts and information just by filling in the required information.

The window is self explanatory, all of the features are viewable in one window. You can load photos from your picture folder and fill in the information. I do not have all the information on some of my quilts, so I just added what I could remember. It also stores your personal information so that you do not have to fill your name in, each time.

When you have filled in the details about your quilts, you can open up the quilt summary page to see all of your quilts at a glance. This page can be printed out and used as an index for your album. You can sort your quilts and in my case, I used categories. This way I could have my quilts and other textile pieces in their own categories, for easier searching.

I used photos that I had available but it is good to make sure you use quality photos. Taking a photo of your quilt on a wall is best, especially if you want to make them into cards or labels. On the other hand, placing the quilt in a setting, works beautifully for holiday cards.

I really like the card feature, especially since I never have a note card when I need one. Now I can just make my own and have them ready to send with gifts. When making a card, you choose from your selection of quilts and choose what information you want to show, on the back of the card. You can also change the fonts to make them larger, or use a fun font, like I did with the kitty card.

I printed out two sets, one for a Christmas card and one for a general card. I used my designs on these two examples with an idea in mind. I think it would be fun to send cards from my designs and insert the pattern inside the card. And since you can use the program for any type of craft, it is something any textile artist could use. And for those of us who sell our pieces, it is an excellent way to keep track of what you made, and who bought it.

I used basic card stock, but you can use any card stock that works with your printer. Imagine the possibilities with specialty card stocks that are available now. Once the information is filled out and a quilt selected, it is only a matter of hitting the print button, no special settings were needed.

This program is so easy, it is ridiculous, I keep thinking I am missing something. But it really is that easy and if you need help, you can download the PDF manual which is nicely formatted and easy to follow. It also includes hints and tips for photographing your quilts and printing.

I wanted to make something for my wonderful visitors, who have put up with my paddling pictures all week and for all the good wishes you have sent me. I meant to make it smaller, need to remember how to use my program again, so I hope this is ok and you enjoy it. It is 139 x 130, done in 14 count, so you can make it smaller by using 18 count or higher. I added color so it would be easier to see, but not something I would actually use, lol.

Sick of the Sea?

Today we went to Ninigret park, which sits on a salt water pond. On the opposite banks is a barrier beach and the ocean.
It was high tide so we could paddle around the inlets, without having to worry about hitting bottom.

This was from our start point. Another beautiful day, sunny with a cool breeze.

We stayed on one half of the pond, since I didn't want to go to the breakers when low tide hit and have to paddle against that, to get back out. Even half the pond was quite the paddle, since we stuck to the shores, we put in a few miles today. This is from one end of the pond, looking back to where we started. Way, way off in the distance, past the last bend in the farthest distance.

Once on the barrier side we could stop at one of the sandy spots that connect to the ocean side. It is too much to drag the boats down the path, so Bill watched the boats so I could walk to the dunes and get a few shots. It was so beautiful and I really wanted to just sit on the beach for a few hours;)

Unfortunately I fell into the water when I went to get out of my boat. My legs were tired and weak today, so I got drenched in the pond. Today I was glad my camera was waterproof, since it went in with me, lol. I think my body is trying to tell me something, but am I listening? Nooooooooooo

Here is another view, going down the beach, it goes on for miles and there is a state campground at the end for trailers only. I would love to be able to spend a weekend, camping on the beach. I hope you have enjoyed my week in the kayak and in a few days I will be getting back to my daily routine and finish up some projects and starting new ones.

Rivers and Oceans!

Today we paddled down Narrow river and into the entrance to the bay and the ocean beyond.
We of course stopped at the beach on the point and just looked at the ocean, I am not up to ocean paddling and I need a better kayak for that;)

It was a beautiful day, but warmer than I thought, so another tired night, but that is good.
I want to take advantage of having fun paddling, while Bill is home, so not much sewing and I will be postponing the review until Tuesday. Not only can you hear about a wonderful quilt program, but get a chance to win your own copy.

Lots of birds were enjoying the weather, I am sure they are glad the storm is over, too.

I found a friend. He seems to know the sound of a potato chip bag opening;)

We went out at high tide and within the hour, the tide started going out and it was fast. I was standing in the water up to my waist and then felt a drop and the water was at my hips. The water rushes so fast in this area, that everyone was having fun drifting from one end to the other shallows. Out boat was up to the water when we came in, the ones on the far left.

This is looking out to the entrance or exit, depending on which way you are going;) Keep going and you are in the Atlantic Ocean.

A look down the beach, the main beach is at the far end. Lots of people enjoying walking out to this area, but not too many, so it is a great place to sit and relax.

Coming back was tougher, the tide was going out and we were going in. I decided to head straight back instead of paddling in the coves, my body was letting me know, enough was enough. I think this house has seen it's day.

Paddling with a new camera!

Today we went to the state park, over 500 acres of water to paddle and I am tired, lol.
I got tired of hearing my parts are not in yet and waiting for my good camera from my BIL, so i decided it was time to get a waterproof pocket camera. I can put it in my life jacket pocket and just pull it out, no more opening the black box and pulling out my large one. Plus my old camera only takes about 5 shots before it is filled up, not good when you are out on the water and see lots of interesting things.

So, I did some practice shots, used the sony cybershot TX10 on autofocus and it does know what to focus on and gets nice clean shots with great color. I didn't have to do anything, just reduced the size and used as is. With the camera I broke, the photos came out on the red side and the old sony tended to be more blue, so it is nice to get true colors right out of the camera. There are lots of features, I nice touch screen, so I don't have to hunt on the body for buttons. It also takes movies and 3D, plus it is waterproof, I can take underwater photos too, so I can have fun in the water and out.

The bad things are, it is hard to get fast shots of birds flying by, lol. I think if I practice more and get used to what I am doing, I can pull out the camera and get smoother shots of moving objects. Also, since it is so slim and the shutter is in the front, you have to watch where you put your fingers. But for a pocket camera, I loved using it, love how the photos came out and think it is a great camera to use on trips or for your home photos. It even has functions for better portraits, so for an all over camera that is also waterproof, it is worth the buy.

I love how the colors look.

This is at the campsites, not sure where that band of color come from, need to check the lens. Then my photoshop crashed when I went to do another photo, so I gave up. My macbook doesn't have the room for the larger files, so guess it is time to clean out my excess files.

A day in the Cove!

Today I slept in, really needed it. Then I got to the doctors and it was a long visit, seems everyone else needed to get in too and since it is a clinic, you wait your turn. I just wanted to get out so I could go paddling, lol. I will be on two antibiotics this time to start killing off the lyme. I need to be symptom free before I can go off or it comes back and I don't want that to happen.

Since it was late, we went to the cove and paddled for three hours, well, paddled and strolled the shores, since it was low tide.
So many wonderful things today and with low tide, we could walk on and along side the breakers.

On the opposite side is a neighborhood and the old Navy base which is now home to Electric Boat. Anyone missing a boat?

There were lots of crabs and starfish. I like the contrast of colors on these.

Bill said this is a dog fish, wish I could have gotten a clearer picture, he was so ugly, he was cute.

And on the way back we paddled through town and then along the marina's. I guess another boat got lost and found it's way here. Tomorrow we are heading south for a paddle, so were we go will depend on what is open in that area.

The Calm after the Storm!

We were lucky, we got a lot of wind and rain, but no damage.
We did lose power, but then again, so did most of RI, lol.
We have a generator, so we were fine, just annoying to have it rumbling all day and night and cords all over the house.
At night, no lights so I walked into a few things, but now the power is on, so I can keep my night light on.

Today was so beautiful, sunny and warm with a cool breeze, the perfect day.
Without power, the doctor was closed, so have to go tomorrow. We decided to go to the town beach and see how the village looked and if there was a lifeguard still. I wanted to paddle from the beach, but you can't during the summer season and the lifeguards were still there along with a sign, no swimming. The heavy rains create bacteria in the coves, so they were being safe and no paddling today:(

I did get the house all cleaned again, cooking and laundry, so I can have fun tomorrow after the docs.
My garden looks sad, the wind really bent my plants down, but they are still rooted and growing, so at least I can still get fresh vegetables. I hope all of you that are still in bad areas, are able to get things cleaned up and back to normal. Prayers to those in Vermont who are going through the terrible floods.

Today I think I did more in one day, than I have all month, lol.
I seem to be getting rotten mood and irritability symptoms as the lyme die off, so I worked it off today.
Lots of items in the yard, that you don't think about, but could be projectiles in the storm, so everything got put away.
Then there is my garden, beans and veggies to pick and lots more coming in, especially my tomatoes, so I hope they live through the winds.

And I am one of those that hates being stuck in a dirty house, lol. I cleaned the house too, so we can rest and listen to the wind howl;) And laundry and some cooking, things that I might not be able to do if we lose power. We do have a generator, so I will have power for the important things like the refrigerator and the tv and a light to sew by.

Halloween Mini Quilts!

I am still working on my ark, but I wanted to do something different and quick, for a break.
I decided to make some Fall pieces and made one for me and one I can give as a gift.
It is a good thing they are prim and Halloween, since my brain is really crooked this week;)

The pieces were made from a free pattern by Tiffany of Primitive Blessings.
She has lots of wonderful free patterns that you can use and lots of wonderful patterns that are priced just right, so worth a look.

Don't forget the giveaway in the previous post. I enjoy hearing your ideas and like the idea of using white on the peacock lane fabrics, I really think that will set them off. I also like the idea of cutting the summer house blocks in half and using that as a design, so keep them coming. I am still having bad days, so i rest more and try to keep busy when I can, but hopefully things will get better and I can start doing more quilting again. Next week, Bill has off, so he can do the work and take me kayaking all week, that has to make me feel better;)

I had to get my brain centered today, to get myself going, but I finally got in a better frame of mind and was glad I went out.
We paddled for over 3 hours, and since it was high tide, we could paddle in and out of the coves further in. I just took my time and enjoyed being out. I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend.

Why I never let Bill take pictures of me;)

We went into the village cove, lots of boats and the restaurant smells were making me hungry. I forgot my snacks at home. It was Bill's night for cooking, so we had fried shrimp, so now I am happy and full.

As for the time it takes to cook my green beans, I have no idea. Maybe because I cook them on low? But, the time in soaking and simmering, gives you the most delicious beans, just tender enough to eat, but not too soft to be mush.

Friday, Felines and Food!

It has been a long week and I had quite a few downs, but the last few days, I had more ups, so hoping for more improvement in the days to come.

Today was cooking day, I had things I had to cook. The veggies are coming in too fast and the kids need to come and take some off my hands. Today I made Summer Squash Puffs. I use this recipe, but I just use corn meal, not a mix, comes out the same. They are really addicting too, I ate an awful lot of them;) I make a double batch, so I have lots for me and Bill to munch on, they make great snacks, hot or cold.

I planted bean seeds, way too many and now I have way too many beans, so today was snapping and cooking. I presoak them the day before. It takes about 6 hours to cook them, so not a slow process, but well worth the effort, fresh beans taste so good. Hopefully my daughter will come over this weekend and take some off my hands, I let her have the cooked ones. No way is she going to spend all day cooking;) Now I wish I had kept my canning supplies, would be nice to have some garden veggies this winter.

Then I went out to see if I had tomatoes, just a few and not the best looking. Lots of rain this week, not enough sun and cooler nights, is not helping. I love fresh stewed tomato sauce. Of course I noticed I had a ton of cucumbers and another squash, like I need more. I have a container of pickled cucumber slices already. I use lemon juice instead of vinegar and some chopped garlic, fresh dill weed and oil. Great snack, side dish or as a topping on your salad.

I was putting away laundry and as you can see, Moki loves socks. He likes it when I throw them, so he can play catch and slobber all over them.

And here is the cat's favorite scratching post, haha. My camera has a flash feature that goes on when the light is low. It throws off little red dashs that were going across the rug and Izzy loves chasing red lights. I only have a few little things to sew onto my ark and then I will add details to the animals, then add a backing. I will add more stitches when I have the batting in, to define certain parts of the animals.

Surprises in the Mail!

I love entering contests and this month, I have been lucky enough to win a few.
This week has been mostly downs, but I keep plugging along and getting surprises in the mail, sure brightens my day.

One prize, I haven't gotten yet, but it is on it's way. I won a Rolling pin spice shelf from Carol of Firecracker Kid Primitives.
It also has a place for wooden spoons, I just love it and I picked out black. I do love the mustard though, but I decided since I have a lot of black pieces and never know what colors I might go with next, black will match anything. Carol has a lot of wonderful prim pieces that she and her husband make, I definitely have my eyes on a few things and they are always willing to customize items or make something to suit your needs.

Another wonderful prize was from Sharon of Moosecraft. I won this wonderful book. I have my eye for a couple of the quilts in the future. I really want to do some real quilting but my brain is still out in the fog;)

And a surprise from my friend Bren, who I originally met in a rug hooking group and is now a member of our PRIMUSA group on ebay. She said she had made this for me and never got a chance to send it, so decided now was a good time, to cheer me up. I love it and I am going to use it on my bench for fall, which isn't too far away. Summer sure is going by too fast. But while I am stuck at home, the generosity of friends and all of your well wishes, brighten my day.

This is the perfect size for my bench, and I can place items on it and still have the pumpkins showing. Bren who has been going through her own troubles, lately, still have time for others. I have also won some fabric and hope to make some charity quilts as soon as I am up to it. With winter coming, warm quilts are needed by shelters and Vicky has set up a wonderful blog where you can read about her cause and maybe donate a quilt to those in need.

I really needed to get out and do things today, no matter how I feel.
It was a beautiful day, not too hot and nice breeze. So, we went to the cove.
It was hotter in the sun than I realized and it did tire me out quick, so instead of paddling in the coves, we went straight to the breakers. The breezes are so much nicer on the open waters and the views were spectacular today. It was so nice to get out and breath in the salt air, was so glad I went.

I do long to go out on the bay, splashing into the waves with my kayak, there is nothing like it. I will just have to a launch in the bay, then I can enjoy a paddle without having to paddle too far.

It was low tide today and lots of shells on the beach. I saw this conch in the water and pulled it out to look at it, then realized it was already occupied, lol. I thank you all for your wonderful comments and good wishes for a quick recovery. I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend, and enjoy the goodness and beauty that God has given us to enjoy.

Friday, Felines and Finishes!

For me, friday is the end of another week and lyme treatment and I think, I made it through another week, lol.
Actually I started on a Monday, so that is my actually two week of treatment day. I feel better in some ways, but weak and tired and it does effect me mentally. But, I know it is all good pain, the lyme is dying and someday I will feel good again and it won't come back this time. Weekends are nice too, I have Bill to boss around and cook for me;)

This is how the girls spend their day, bird watching.

And playing with Casey. Poor guy loves to play, so I have to make sure I spend a little time with him, outside.

And here is how I spend my nights, working on my ark. Adding more animals and birds.

And more animals and birds and some silly monkeys. I am definitely getting silly lately, but having fun;) I have a noah's book by janet bolton, so I used her monkeys, just need to add faces, as well as details on other things. I have a few ideas of what I want to add next, so we shall see;)

Life's Simple Pleasures!

I am in week two of my meds and I have my ups and downs. I am working on my ark and added two new animals and tomorrow I will add a border and start details and add birds. My camera doesn't seem to take very good photos of moki with a flash and he wasn't being cooperative. I tried taking photos of the bunnies in the yard, but they looked like devil bunnies, lol. But I was treated to a beautiful sunset this evening and was able to capture the lights in the clouds.

Sometimes we need to just enjoy the beauty around us.

Like the clouds, we are all unique in our own way.

And the simple love and sweetness of our kitties.

Animals, two by two!

I added a few more things this weekend. I finished Mrs. Noah and the tree and then added some animals. I took the elephants from the Country Days book, but I think they look a bit babyish, so I can going to add tusks to mine.

On the right side I went with zebras. I used the horse pattern and traced it out a little differently, then used this fun striped fabric that my friend kelly gave me. Later I will add birds and some will go on a back or two. I think it is coming out a little wonky, trying to keep it with the bottom lines for layout, but my brain is wonky too, so wonky it shall be;)

Still waiting for the camera part, it is supposed to come on the 15th, but I sure wish they would hurry, so maybe I could get some shots that show the colors better. So, you will have to bear with me and look at my horrid photos for now;)

Noah's Ark!

I was going to wait to take a photo, but I thought I would show you my progress. The picture is horrid, but i have to put up with my old camera which only has 5 mp's, so even in light the photos aren't great. I am using the book Noah, by Patek, Brannock and Kimmel. I plan on adding a few embellishments like a beard, etc, after I finish stitching the piece. I just wanted something fun to work on and I will hang it over my double doors. The space is narrow, so the piece will be 9" by 68" long. I will probably add a black border just to frame it, since it can't be too big. After I sew Mrs Noah and the tree, I will start adding animals and then see what space is left and throw some birds in the empty areas.

Today I started out feeling horrid, but then I went out for a swim and felt good enough to do some garden work. I have two yellow squashes almost ready and the beans should be ready for this weekend. Just wish the tomatoes would ripen, next year I have to start earlier. I really appreciate all of your comments and well wishes. My brain works on and off, so I can only do so much thinking in one day;)

Sewing Helper!

Today I am having a pretty good day, the pain has lessened, but the nerves have kicked in.
I know it will be up and down and it will get worse before it gets better, but knowing the end result, makes it all worth it.

I started a new project to keep my hands busy, I can only work so much at a time before my hand cramps up, but I am enjoying making it and I will show some picts when I get a little more done. While I was in my sewing room, cutting out pieces, someone snuck in. The cats really want to get into my room and I have to watch them. Moki and Izzy are the worst, they know to hide under and behind things so I can't get to them, lol. And they all seem to want to get to this spot and wreak havoc getting there.

Prim Goodies!

I finally took a photo of the new goodies I received from the prim swap in our ebay group, USAPRIM. Lori from HomeSpunPrims sent me the most wonderful gifts. I just love the items and can make a special grouping with them. She does such beautiful work, it is shame my old camera can't capture the work and warmth of the pieces.

I was feeling worse today so I went to a walk in clinic nearby, that has a group of good doctors and you don't have to make an appointment. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to drop again since Bill does have to go back to work, lol. Well, once he heard about the symptoms I had and questioned me further, he diagnosed me with lyme. My doc had mentioned it, but I don't remember even having a tick on me. But, for the last few years I have been getting sicker and it was frustrating. I didn't even realize that some of my problems were a sign of lyme, seems I have most of them. So, I am on a regime of antibiotics for a month with a follow up and hopefully this will work and I can start living again. With me it was effecting my nervous, muscle and joints, so I thought it was old age and not being in shape. My hands are even starting to feel better, so hopefully I can start working on some small projects this weekend.

This is what happens when you have too much time on your hands, you get a bit daft;)
I decided today that I had to try a swim, so I went in the pool and moved around a bit.
The cool water felt so good and it really helped my back. One of the problems with an er is the beds are hard as a rock and since I couldn't open my eyes or sit up without spinning like a top, I was stuck for 8 hours on my back and it really did not help.

Bill got some corn on the cob to go with our steak sandwiches and I went in the kitchen to see if he was ready and this is what I saw. He is being so helpful and even his sweat shows how much he loves me, lol.

Thank you all for the well wishes and hopefully I can get back to normal next week. I really hate sitting around, it makes me nuts.

Rough week Sale!

I had a rough week and ended up in the er, so a bit off these days, but slowly getting back to normal.
Not sure what symptoms are from my episode or the drugs they shouldn't have given me, but I can say I will never go to that hospital again. Since I realized I was better off if I left, I had to sign out on my own and now it isn't covered, doesn't seem fair.

So, this weekend I am doing a buy one, get one free epattern sale. Buy one pattern and get any other of equal or lesser value for free. Just let me know which one you want for free in the comment box.

Antique Pin Keep!

I finished my pin keep, and then I went to take pictures. The moment I turned on my camera, it started making a funny motor sound and it wouldn't let me take a photo. Everything else works, but not photo taking, errr. I was cleaning it before hand, so I thought I might have done something to it, then I remembered our kayak trip. Bringing back my gear, I was swarmed by mosquitos and I dropped my gear to grab the bug spray. What I didn't think was, I had my camera case too and that got thrown to the ground, duh. So maybe I broke something. I am getting a nice new one next month, but I can't go without a camera that long, lol. I have an old sony, so today I figured out how to use it again and too some photos with it. At least it works and I can work on my settings to try and get better photos, but for now, you will have to put up with grainy photos. This was on night shot, it was the only way I could get it at night and still be able to see it.

The original idea came from an antique pen wipe, the hearts and hands. I loved the old look and wanted to reproduce it.

Then I decided it needed more items, so I added inner pockets. This is going to be a gift, so I sewed on the wool floss applique, at the tops only and left the middle section open, then I wound the real floss around them. This way she will have some hand dyed floss to use and she can store some of hers, that way too. The floss is a lot nicer looking than the picture.

For the other side, I went with a long pocket, so it can be used for skeins or whatever she wants to put in there. I will be adding some goodies to it later, before I send it out.

I added a strip to the outer, middle edge to give it support and a button closure, with a little extra room for when it is full of goodies. I made an applique on the outside and wondering if I should add her name to it too. I hope you like it and wish I could show the true prim look, it has been antiqued with walnut, as well. Tomorrow I will have to see if I can get better photos outside.

Ok, I am a bit punchy today, think I spent too much time in the sun, lol.
We finally got out for a paddle, and it even sprinkled on and off, but it was still humid.

There was a beautiful blue heron but he was hidden too much in the marsh and with the rain, I couldn't get a shot, maybe he will be there next time. Always wonderful wild fowl to be seen on the shores and in the marsh coves, but today we got a rare treat. I thought I saw a dog at first, then realized it was a deer with her two fawns. They were trying to get out of the neighborhood they were in, heading for the point, so not sure where they were going.

I think they were confused as to where to go, especially when they saw this sign.

I guess they can't read, or they didn't care, they just kept going.

And being the fools that we are, we kept paddling in the rain, around the harbor. I was able to take this shot during a rain break, boats going in and out of the harbor and a few people came out to fish on the breakers. We are not the only ones who love to "Play in the rain";)

New Punch Needle: Antique Black Cat!

I thought it was time to make something new and a new pattern. This piece is based on an antique rug and then I added my own touches and motifs. I have kept with the simplicity of the original and even used scrap floss in most of it, in keeping with the original style antique rugs. I did use black valdani for the kitty, I just love how it looks in a punched piece. The pattern is a single pattern, you will get a JPG file that has a photo of the punched piece and the design, ready to print, as is. If you want to hook this piece, you will need to enlarge it yourself. There are no instructions or color charts, but I am always happy to answer any of your questions to help you in creating your own piece.

The piece is for sale, 80.00, shipping and insurance is included.
It measures 6" x 4". The edge is done with lopi wool yarn and the back is finished off with a piece of wool and a hand signed tag on the back. It also comes with a certificate.

Mini Stitchery Quilt!

I finished one thing today, a mini stitchery quilt.
I wanted to link to the site where i found it, but now I cannot find it, so not sure if it was on a site or I scanned it in from a book.
This is to be a gift for a swap I am doing, I hope she likes it. The photo is horrid, but when I was attempting to fix the photo in photoshop, it crashed, and I am too lazy to start over;)

Tomorrow I will have my new punched piece finished and hopefully the pattern as well. And for you kitty fans, here is your cute for the evening. This is Dora's spot of the week, from here she can watch who comes in the door and when Moki comes up the stairs;) The quilt above her is one of my first quilts, nothing fancy, I just made things then with no idea what I was doing. Well, I still don't know what I am doing;)

Wool Eye Glass Cases!

I am still in my lazy mood, so today I made another eye glass case.
I got the pattern from Better Homes and Gardens. The felted fun flower I made up and the prim sunflower is from Babycakes.
The one on the left is more prim, done with dyed wool and basic blanket stitch.
The one on the right is more modern, since I made it for my daughter and wanted it to be fun.
I used roving and needle felted the flower and yarns into the wool. Then I went over the piece with floss to tack it down and embellish it. I decided to add a few swirls with the floss that I won from Laura of ArtFabrik. The color I used is called Honey and has a nice variation of light to darker yellows.

These are fun and easy to make up and you can add anything you like for a design. Great idea to make ahead for gifts.
I use wool that has been over felted so it is thicker and great cushion for your glasses.

I wanted to have my new, finished piece to show today, but I got lazy and still need to finish it.
Today I got a prize that I won from CT Publishing. I won a bundle of wool felt and the ebook, "Faniciful Felties". I got the ebook and have been having fun looking through the designs and trying to decide what to make first. There are so many fun characters with accessories, I can make a whole town of people and animals.

Today I got the wool felt so now I can start a project, it is beautiful felt, much better than the regular felt in the craft stores. Check out their Blog, there are lots of wonderful tutorials and great contests for all types of crafting.

Since I was in a lazy mood today, I decided it was a good day to organize all my loose floss. Most of it was a giant nest, so it took me all day to pull it out and rewind it. I thought it would be good to use on my new felt projects and also other ones for christmas ornaments to get a head start. Maybe this weekend I will try some items, after I finish my punch, the stitchery and ......;)

One box has loose strands still, but I use those when I need a small piece for an eye or something small, so not worth winding those.

I have been doing some small items and working on things, so no new finishes.
I did start a new punch today, so that should be done by the end of the week, of course it contains a kitty and speaking of kitties, here is what my gang was up to today.

This is not the first photo, but this is the photo for the giveaway. Give me a funny caption for the photo and I will draw a name on friday night, July 15th. The winner gets their choice, of any one, of my epatterns.

What really happened was that I got the catnip out and Dora came running. I threw some on the rug since I had to clean anyways. Dora loves catnip way too much.

And heaven forbid anyone who gets in her way;) It looks worse than it is, Izzy has no sense and tried to get some catnip before Dora was done and I don't even go near Dora till she tires out;) Once she left, then Moki got his turn.

Lady Bug Quilt!

I wanted to make something fun for my dauther's new place and found this design. It is a free design by Sandra of BabyCakes.
I wanted a saying and found this one, it fits the piece and a good message for my daughter who is of the, I want it now generation;)

I started out with watercolor pencils and then went over it with as little water as I could, so it wouldn't run out of the area.
I used a bit of art pens to enhance some of the designs and shadow, then went around the designs with different flosses. The yellow around the flowers is a beautiful hand dyed floss that I won from Laura at Artfabrik! The green lettering and ground, is presencia thread that I won from Jane's Fabrics and Quilts! The rest of the floss is basic dmc and the green stems and leaves are one of my hand dyes. For the border I used a fabric I won from Pat Sloan!

It was fun to do and I like how the watercolor pencils worked on the kona white. I got mine from Jo anns with a coupon, so great fabric to play with and I want to try some dying with it. I had a hard time getting the blue out on this fabric, so it is still wet, as you can see. Tomorrow I will look at it again when it dries and hopefully I can get the rest out. With watercolor, I can't get those areas wet or they will run. I am not sure if I should leave it as is, or dry pounce some blue for the sky and green below; what do you think?

Thursday Thillies!

It is still hot and I slow down in the heat. I have to wait till the afternoon to swim in the pool so I can exercise and still breath.
Tomorrow we will get a reprieve so that will be nice and the rain it should bring will be great for the garden.

Moki as usual, likes to pose for me and be his usual goofy self. Izzy has even gotten more silly lately, think the heat is getting to all of us, lol.

Moki is a big kitty, has really big whiskers and a really big mouth. Did I mention he has really bad breath too.
He is a meat eater, so he eats about a can a day along with dry. Talk about fish breath.

He really knows how to rest, he is so content and takes up half the table.
